Dear Committee Chairs:
Attached is a document entitled “Green Party and Event Suggestions”. It was developed by the Oak-Roots group, which is a district-wide environmental advisory panel.
The purpose of the document is to provide suggestions for environmentally-friendly alternatives when planning class parties and school events. The document has already been distributed to the new room parents. It is being forwarded to all the committee chairs that host/plan events.
We are proud of the fact that Northwood is a MI Green School, as are all Royal Oak schools. The students and staff have worked hard to achieve this designation for the last 2 years. We would like to continue to reduce the amount of trash generated by making environmentally-friendly choices and supporting recycling efforts in all the activities we participate in this year.
Please take time to review the short 2-page document. The green school committee is asking all room parents AND committee chairs to consider environmentally-friendly alternatives and suggestions when planning your events this year. This would include things such as: purchasing recycled content products or products made from renewable resources (paper instead of plastic); as well as making sure that as many items as possible are being recycled from your events. Paper plates and cups (minus the leftover food and drink) can be recycled as can cardboard boxes, plastic beverage containers, etc. Another important suggestion is avoiding single serving containers (particularly individual bottled water). Lastly, minimizing garbage cans and increasing the recycling bins during events can help.
I know that adding on another task to your event(s) may be difficult. We have a committee of volunteers that can help in whatever way you may need to accomplish a “greener PTA event”. So please feel free to contact me with questions, for help or additional information. Our committee is working on making additional signs for recycling and garbage containers that can be used during events.
I can be reached via email or home phone 248-586-1463.
Thank you for your support in continuing to make Northwood a Michigan Green School.
