After missing the midnight deadline and causing a brief, technical shutdown of state government, lawmakers early this morning approved most of a new state budget and a temporary budget that got the state gears moving again. The budget goes to Gov. Jennifer Granholm for her signature. Granholm meanwhile signed an interim, 30-day budget will fund state government and public schools. This temporary measure will maintain critical services while the government continue to work for a balanced budget. Permanent school funding must yet be worked out, after the House rejected a bill that would cut funds by $218 per pupil for all school districts. School districts will not be able to make long term plans until this issue is resolved. The House will begin work immediately to look for additional sources of revenue. Readers should contact their state reps to make sure school funding maintained.
