The Health & Wellness committee conducted handwashing demonstrations in each of the classrooms a few weeks ago. The students were given information on good germs and bad germs and why it is important to wash their hands. Handouts were given to each student and were donated to Northwood by Children’s Hospital. With the help of glo-in-the-dark “fake germs” and a black light, it was apparent to everyone how germs are easily spread throughout a classroom. Thank you to Lindsey Harris for obtaining the handouts and presenting the demonstrations to the classes.
An enrichment class providing information on Brain Gym was presented to teachers last week. Teachers from all of Royal Oak’s elementary schools were invited. We had a great showing with over 45 attendees. Brain Gym can be a tool used by teachers and parents to help kids to refocus and relax through the use of movement. Improved reading and hand writing are two examples of how Brain Gym can be beneficial. The Health & Wellness committee is hoping to be able to provide Brain Gym to Northwood students this year.
Yoga classes will be offered to several of our classes this year. Fourth grade yoga will be offered on Wednesdays from 4:00pm until 4:45pm beginning November 3, 2010. Fifth grade yoga will begin in January. The sessions will run for 6 weeks. Yoga will also be ofered to 2nd and 3rd graders. Additional information will provided once it is available.
Finally, please remember to routinely inspect your children for lice. It is an unpleasant topic; however, prevention is the best way to prevent lice. Once it is in your home, you will be washing, vacuuming, and cleaning over and over for a long time. Remind your children to not share hats, headbands, brushes, etc.
Lice do not like high heat, so occassionally toss backpacks in the dryer for at least 30 minutes. Backpacks can also be stored in plastic bags in the school lockers if you are concerned.
Do not share hairbrushes or combs at home. Store in separate plastic bags to prevent the spread of lice.
Have a good week.
