Too often, the call goes out to take our concerns to Lansing. Next Wednesday evening, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Lansing comes near to us. I am encouraging all of our school community parents, their family members, friends and concerned community members to attend the “Fight School Cuts Task Force Meeting” to be held at the Madison High School Auditorium on April 20 2011. In working with State Representative, Jim Townsend, I was sorry to find our two auditoriums fully booked. This event will be held in Jim’s territory (District 26) and should be considered a full-fledged Royal Oak event.
We need to pack the Madison High School auditorium next Wednesday night. The phone calls, emails and letters are definitely working in both our state House and Senate. Legislators are becoming very aware of the negative reaction being generated in many communities about the Governor’s proposed cuts to K-12 education, the seizure of K-12 funds for other purposes and redirection of Proposal A funding to community colleges and universities (who have the ability to raise their own revenue via tuition).
Each community needs to raise a strong local response in an effort to “fight school cuts.” Lansing is noticing. We need to keep the concern generating through Lansing’s current budget-making process. Next Wednesday evening presents an opportunity very close to our community. We will not need to drive all the way to Lansing to have our voices heard.
I have attached a copy of the formal announcement about State Representative Jim Townsend’s open forum. Please forward to others in our community and encourage all you can to attend.
