More Information: Common Core State Standards Initiative
October 5, 2011
Dear PTA Council Leaders,
Advocacy: what does it look like? What kinds of tasks are associated with it? What should its goals and outcomes be? As PTA leaders, we spend time structuring and implementing advocacy efforts in our schools, communities, and across the state.
What if we could provide training to our members and other parents on advocacy skills? Imagine how much more effective our efforts could be. Michigan PTA has an opportunity to do just that through the Common Core State Standards Initiative,. Funded by a generous grant from National PTA, Michigan PTA will spend the next year training our members on advocacy and educating parents across the state about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), a new set of internationally benchmarked educational standards designed for college- and career-readiness. These standards, if properly implemented, will dramatically increase achievement for Michigan’s children.
In support of this effort, Michigan PTA will be conducting a 2-day training session for leaders from across the state. At this event, we will be discussing the CCSS and training leaders on how to use National PTA’s advocacy curriculum to train others. Our goal is to build a corps of 75 trainers who will support our efforts throughout the upcoming year.
Those who attend the training will be expected to conduct advocacy trainings and CCSS presentations over the course of the next year. Ideal candidates will:
• Be comfortable and confident in their ability to give lively and engaging presentations.
• Have flexible availability that will allow for two to five CCSS presentations each month.
• Be available to attend the entire training on November 5th and 6th, 2011. Overnight accommodations (for the 6th) and meals will be provided.
Space is limited at this training. We ask that you submit names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of two interested members to TheStandards@michiganpta.org, as well as a brief description of each nominee’s experience giving presentations and/or training others. Submissions will be considered until October 14th, after which invited participants will be notified by October 20th.
We will have an informational conference call to answer questions:
