On Wednesday, April 22nd, Northwood is holding a Waste-Free Lunch Day. Students are encouraged to pack their lunch that day and include as many items as possible that can be eaten, reused or recycled and as few items as possible that must be thrown away. Students will be tallying the amount of waste they generate before and during our Waste-Free Lunch Day to measure the impact they made on waste reduction.

Tips for packing a Waste-Free Lunch:

• Drinks in containers that can be recycled or reused (like a thermos)
• A cloth napkin instead of paper
• Sandwiches & snacks packaged in reusable containers instead of ziploc bags
• Whole fruits without packaging or fruit packaged in reusable containers
• Reusable forks & spoons

Don’t Include:

• Individually wrapped snacks
• Plastic baggies that are not reusable
• Disposable forks & spoons
• Straws

Recycle:
These items can be recycled in the Northwood cafeteria:

• Plastic containers (yogurt & juice containers, plastic water bottles)
• Cardboard containers (juice boxes & milk cartons)

Did you know that four to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide in a year and that your family likely uses about 1,500 of these bags each year? To help cut down on plastic bag usage, the Norhtwood PTA is providing each student with a reusable Northwood tote bag which your family can use to carry groceries and other items.

Wednesday, April 22nd is Earth Day and in the spirit of promoting environmental awareness, Northwood students and families are encouraged to “Go Green” through the following acitivities. Our theme for the week is “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.”
