I attended Northwood Elementary from 1957-1963. I have such fond memories of my old school, even remembering the school's song. I especially loved the Glee Club which the fourth and fifth graders were allowed to try out for under Mrs. Reidberg (I hope I have her name correctly spelled). We did such wonderful performances both at Christmas and in the Spring. She even made a record which we could purchase and which I hope is still somewhere in my parent's home. It was a very big deal for her to be able to do that. It was so exciting to the kids. In the Spring, we had a fair and talent show was the "the thing" if you got to be in it. I especially remember the cotton candy at the fair and can still taste how wonderful it was, freshly spun from the machine. My kindergarten classroom was the one just outside the main door, offset from the rest of the school. I loved the library and when two of my four children were very young, we visited and wouldn't you know it - the librarian still had my favorite book I always checked out, "Laddie the Brave Little Collie." She let me have it and I have it to this day - even the sign in card with my maiden name, Hemmeter, was still in the pocket. The school was always clean and I was always happy to be there. If it had not been for the school nurse, I would never have been diagnosed until much later with my eye disease and would have probably done very poorly in school. I have RP (retinitis pigmentosa) and am now legally blind with only one degree of vision left. I remember the day we received the polio vaccine given to us in a sugar cube with the help of Mom-volunteers. We had great holiday parties and the teachers always made it so festive - Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, Halloween. Isn't it funny to remember a time when girls were not allowed to wear slacks/pants to school and boys dressed and acted like gentlemen and the girls as young ladies. The school was so cool the way it was laid out. I can remember walking down the curved steps where I believe the gym was to downstairs and in the evenings there were sliding bars that covered the stairwells so mischievous, curious children could not walk around the school unattended. At one time, there were crafts in the hallway where the auditorium and gym were in the afternoons. The playgrounds were awesome as well and many days after school, we'd go home and get out bikes and ride around the asphalt playgrounds. I remember my siz grade teacher's name was Mrs. Snydeer and she was so kind to me. I didn't have such a good year in the fifth grade as the teacher really was mean, but did teach us some nice things such as World War I songs and she made sure we learned our arithmetic. All in all, it was such a nice school. I even attended ballet classes when I was really small on Saturdays. I hope others get to read this and maybe some folks might see this and respond - that would be awesome. I really loved going to that school (we lived at 1906 Burnwood Road) so the walk to school was not far at all.
Thanks for the opportunity to share fond, loving memories.

Jodi,
I know you “don’t particularly have an event design for fathers/sons”; what I’m asking is that you do design an event for fathers & sons. Unless of course you think that nurturing the father & son relationship is of no particular value.
Tks,
Chester

Hi Chester,
I understand that parents work so we make an effort to schedule events both in the morning and the evening. Although we don't particularly have an event design for fathers/sons or moms/daughters, all of our evening events, such as the Apple Fun Fair, Movie Night, the Ice Cream Social or Family Picnic, are for all parents and children. If you have any thoughts regarding events, we're always open to new ideas. There are a variety of committee chair positions that would allow you to recommend and plan events that would suit your needs.

Since the Northwood PTA sponsors a Daddy/Daughter -“Masquerade “Ball and a Mom & Son event may I ask you to consider adding a Dad & Son event to your program.

Thank you,

I'm not sure all the info. I need is here for me to enroll my son. Which of the books are right for an 8 year old boy? When should the book be finished? Is there just one meeting to discuss the book? Is the meeting after school? Which day?

thanks,
Lori Folger
