Four Great Ways to Support a Northwood Student!

Julia Harris, a Northwood 2^nd grader, suffers from an incurable Mitochondrial Disease. To prepare for the upcoming Energy For Life Walk, we are declaring next week Northwood’s Mitochondrial Awareness Week. Look what’s in store!

Open Swim Night- Monday, May 14^th at ROMS from 7-8:15pm. $10 per child collected at the door with 50% benefitting Julia’s Joules. If you are planning on attending, please send a quick email to Andrea Miller at themillerclan5@gmail.com so we can make sure to have enough lifeguards.

Guest Bartender Night- Come and see Mrs. Asburn, Mrs. Villerot and Mrs. Stanley behind the bar.

What: Buy a drink, a raffle ticket or some food and raise money for a great cause

Where: Lily’s Seafood, Royal Oak

When: Tuesday, May 15^th from 6-9pm (or have lunch or dinner all day long and a % of your bill will be donated to this fundraiser)

Why: We are a wonderful community that looks out for each other. This is a great way to show Julia and her family that each of us can help find a cure for her.

Energy For Life Walk donations- make a monetary donation to Julia’s Joules.

Class Presentations- Next week, some Northwood 2^ndgraders will be visiting each classroom to give a presentation about Mitochondrial Disease and how Julia is affected. Students will be able to purchase a button of support from the presenters for $1 (or more if desired.) Buttons will also be available during the Thursday lunch period for those choosing to make a donation at that time. All donations will be grouped into a “Northwood Classmates” category and given to Julia’s Energy For Life Walk Team, Julia’s Joules. Our hope is that each child will realize that even they can make a difference! These buttons will be worn on Friday, May 18^thas a final show of support before the charity walk on Saturday.

Old Fashioned Family Picnic – June 8, 2012

Come to the Northwood PTA family picnic!

June 8th from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Games, balloon twister, cotton candy, popcorn, face painting and tattoos!
Bring a dish to pass…enough for 8-10 people.

Families with last names A-J bring a side salad (green, pasta or potato) or appetizer.
Families with last names K-S bring main dish items (pizza, meatballs, etc…).
Families with last names T-Z bring a dessert.

Of course, if you have a favorite recipe, go with it!!
Bring your own beverages and a chair or blanket to sit on.
Paper products and chicken will be provided.
Held at playground area of the school.
If it rains we will have it indoors!!

NORTHWOOD STAFF SHINES!

Staff Appreciation Week is Monday May 7^th– Friday May 11^th.

The Week’s events include:

*A daily drawing for a $25 GC

*Note cards and pens will be available in the Media Center so your child can write a note to their favorite staff member. The notes will be delivered at the end of each day.

Monday: Coffee & Baked Goods for the staff in the lounge

Tuesday: Snacks. Lemonade & iced tea all day in the lounge for the staff

Wednesday: Cupcakes donated from Just Baked along with a cute drink

Thursday : Goodie Bags donated from Changez Salon & a little pampering for our staff thanks to Kristyn Strabbing

Friday: Staff Appreciation Luncheon

Hey Moms,

Looking to do something a little different with your Son? How about a little “High Adventure“ at the Howell Nature Center. We (Northwood PTA) are trying to plan a great day of fun and adventure but need your feedback so we can finalize the plans.

The event is scheduled for Sunday, May 6th. The Nature Center is offering 3 different events: 1) zip line, 2) wall climbing, and 3) a Nature Program. You can also explore the nature preserve.

The scheduling for the events will be based on your response. To confirm a group of our size, we need to know who is interested in what events. Please fill out the information below and return this sheet and money to your son’s teacher or PTA box by March 30th. Once everything is confirmed, I will be contacting you. We are all hoping we can get this to work, because the boys will LOVE it, so please respond by March 30th!

2011-2012 PTA Reflections Update:

The Michigan PTA Reflections awards have been announced. Unfortunately, none of our Northwood finalists received honors at the state level. Royal Oak had one honoree; a student at Adams Elementary was awarded excellence in the visual arts category. I’m still waiting for our school’s portfolio to be returned from the state competition. Our students’ entries were not available for showcasing at Northwood’s Open House, but look for a display in the library in May. Congrats again to all the finalists for their wonderful effort! Next year’s theme is “The Magic of the Moment…” Please encourage your students to begin thinking about their next entry!
